Has western society turned vampires into pansies?

Without a doubt, when we hear the word "vampire" we think of some sparkling, effeminate, emotional, gentle, skinny high school boy. Either that or we think of something stupid like the vampire diaries, where it's all about models and being sexy. What happened to the original vampire? weren't vampires supposed to be murdering bloodthirsty psychopaths?
