A low energy breed, small dog?

I'm interested in a small breed for a dog but I do not want a dog that is extremely hyper, just laid back and loves to hang out with the family. I used to own a pekingese when I was younger and she was just so laid back and loving (I was a child and my parents got the dog but she always had to be around me). What I remember from her is that she was great with me as a kid and just laid back, enjoyed being around the family. My husband does not like that breed, which is a shame... So what other small dog breeds are good with family and loves to curl up next to your lap? I would like a list from experienced owners or those who know about the breed so I can do my own research.
